Handbrake is a free multimedia utility which can convert standard DVD's into compressed formats: MP4 and MKV. One thing you have to mind is that Handbrake can only convert standard video DVD's that you would normally play in a DVD player. Handbrake won't convert a DVD-ROM with video files saved on it as individual files(AVI, MPG, WMV, MOV,etc).
